Phase One Large LS/BR Lens CPU / FPC element cleaning Tier 2

What is  a Large Lens  FPC element

Phase One FPC element refers to a Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) board that is integrated into the lens barrel. This FPC is used for the communication and electronic control between the lens components and the camera body/digital back, especially in zoom lenses.

Key functions of the FPC element in Phase One (and other) lenses:

  • Communication: It connects the lens's internal mechanisms, such as the focusing motor and aperture control, to the main camera's controller and image signal processor (ISP).
  • Data Transfer: It transmits data regarding the specific position of the lens elements, which is then used by the camera's software (like Capture One) for advanced image optimization.
  • Mechanical Flexibility: The "flexible" nature of the circuit board is crucial for zoom lenses, as the connecting portion includes foldable or deformable sections that can accommodate the physical changes in length as the lens barrel extends and retracts.
  • Enhanced Functionality: This electronic integration enables advanced features such as:
    • Autofocus (AF) and manual focus modes.
    • Automatic diaphragm operation.
    • Faster, more reliable communication between the lens, camera body, and digital back.
    • Potential for firmware upgrades to the lens via the camera system.

What is a Large Lens CPU

  • A Phase One "CPU lens" refers to a medium-format lens designed by Phase One (or in partnership with Schneider Kreuznach) that contains an integrated 16-bit Central Processing Unit (CPU). These lenses are designed for the Phase One XF and Mamiya 645AFD camera systems to enable advanced communication between the lens, camera body, and digital back.

Here is a breakdown of what a Phase One CPU lens is and its features:

  • 16-Bit CPU for Communication: The CPU allows for bi-directional communication between the lens and the camera system, enabling faster, more reliable, and more accurate auto-focusing.
  • Optimisation in Capture One: Because the lens is equipped with a CPU, it can store specific lens characteristics. When used with Phase One's Capture One RAW processing software, this data is used for automatic, advanced image optimisation (e.g., lens-specific corrections).
  • Upgradable Firmware: The 16-bit CPU allows the lens's internal firmware to be upgraded, ensuring it remains compatible with new camera features and optimisations.
  • Part of the Digital Leaf Shutter (LS) Family: Most modern Phase One CPU lenses, particularly the "Blue Ring" series, are Schneider Kreuznach Leaf Shutter lenses, which offer extremely fast flash synchronisation, up to 1/1600s.
  • "D" Designation: Many of these lenses are marked with a "D" (e.g., 28mm f/4.5 D), signifying their optimisation for digital back sensors.
